Common Questions about Satellite TV
Q:
Do I get extra channels with satellite?
A:
Canadian satellite television distributors can only provide the same channels as those found on cable. We are all licensed under the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) and can only provide stations approved by the CRTC for broadcast in Canada. Satellite companies claim they have more channel selection than cable, but take a closer look at what they are offering. Eliminate duplication, channels broadcast in languages you don’t understand, and channels you will never watch and the line-up is very comparable to that found on Aurora Cable.

Q:
Is it true that weather can affect reception?
A:
Yes. Satellite reception can be affected by harsh weather such as heavy rain, snow and ice. Any obstruction of the satellite signals will cause an interruption of service or even result in a blackout. Also, if the satellite dish has been installed incorrectly, these interruptions will happen more frequently. In addition, satellite TV is a “line of sight” technology. This means that the satellite dish must have a clear view of the satellite to receive the signals. A neighbours house, trees, buildings or anything obstructing this “line of sight" will disrupt reception. What seems to be a clear line of sight this year might change over time from trees maturing, houses or buildings being built in the area or any other object that might block the transmission of the signal.

Q:
What happens if I need repairs?
A:
Satellite companies offer dish maintenance plans if you need to replace or repair your equipment. Dish Maintenance fee is $5 per month and is for a 12 month term…a $35 penalty is charged if cancelled. Keep in mind the coverage that is offered in this plan is very restricted and does not include service calls. General service calls have a minimum fee of $70 (could be more if it is a major problem). If you have to send your equipment back to the manufacturer it will be at your expense. In addition, if you live outside a 50km radius of the point of sale there will be mileage charges.

Q:
Are there any hidden fees associated with satellite?
A:
It has been our experience through research and our own customers input that you must ask and be persistent with your questions to get the necessary details on extra fees and charges, terms and contracts, promotions and deals or you may get a price shock on your monthly cost. Often if the right and direct questions are not asked the information is not forth coming.

Here is a list of suggested questions you should ask before you consider satellite:
-
Do promotional rates change depending on the length of contract?

-

Is there a minimum level of programming that I have to subscribe to? Does the minimum level of programming change if I do not sign a contract?

-

Are there any hidden fees that I should be aware of?

-

Is there a termination fee if I decide to disconnect my service before my contract has expired?

-

If I decide to temporarily suspend my programming for a period of time will I still be charged a fee?

-

Will I be able to watch different programming on separate TVs? What extra equipment is necessary to do this?

-

What do hand remotes cost? Do I have the option of renting a hand remote?

-

Why are there so many duplicated channels in your channel line up?

-

What if I have problems with my satellite dish or associated equipment?

-
Can I receive my local channels with satellite?
